Let’s meet Raye.
Describe your role at LEO Learning.
I’m a Learning Consultant, which means I play a part in creating experiences that learners love. There are many layers to my role and it all starts with identifying the skills, knowledge and attitudes of an audience and then designing a learning experience that closes this gap.
I design, scope, script, build, review, amend and deliver learning to our clients. A Lead Learning Designer once told me that we are the Alpha and Omega of learning design. We are there at the start and at the end of all projects and we tie everything together in-between, which is true! And that’s my role.
Which part of working at LEO Learning do you love most?
I’ve been at LEO Learning for over two years and I fell in love with it straight away. There are lots of reasons why I love it but, if I had to pick one, I would say it’s the people. We are a team and we operate as a team – that includes our clients!
If I had to pick a second, I’d say it’s our learning transformation vision. We are bold. We want to be the best and we are constantly adapting to achieve our vision.
I’ve watched LEO Learning grow significantly in the last two years and it’s such an honour to have witnessed and have been a part of this transformation.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
It would have to be the Commercial Competence course we designed and delivered to a major global client recently. It has been one of the most challenging projects I have worked on at LEO Learning due to its size and complexity.
It has been a monster project, but it’s one I have loved working on. I think that’s reflected in what we produced.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome?
This is both personal and professional. For those who know me now it might be hard to believe, but I have not always been the most confident at speaking.
In my personal life I used to be very quiet and struggled with any kind of interaction, whether that was face-to-face or on the phone. In fact, I used to avoid picking up the phone if I could.
So what’s changed? Since being at LEO Learning I have thrown myself into challenging situations and pushed myself to overcome this. I am now on the phones all the time and, at times, you can’t keep me quiet.
I think this has had a positive impact on the work I produce and in the way I relate to people. Being able to openly communicate and get to know people, as well as people getting to know me, can form the basis of long-lasting, collaborative relationships.
What are the three things you can’t work without?
I’ll keep this one short:
- The close relationship I have with my team
- My laptop (may we never have desktops again)
- Friday beers
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I had so many ideas of what I wanted to be when I grew up (Tomb Raider was the first), but one actually sticks in my mind.
This might sound terribly sad, but I remember watching the opening scene of Toy Story and thinking, ‘How did they know they were going to start the film this way?’
My child brain went immediately to the thinking behind the animation. I questioned how things worked and the processes people thought about in order to reach the final product.
Throughout school and university I wrote, filmed, recorded, photographed and edited as many media projects as I could get my hands on.
I learned the processes and quickly became the jack of all trades – the Alpha and Omega – of media production. Somehow, I landed myself a job at LEO Learning doing just that.
