Byod: What It Means for Workplace Productivity

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a new trend in the workplace, leading on from successful ‘Bring Your Own Computer’ initiatives within many organisations. It’s about employees using mobile devices they own and pay for themselves in their daily work, typically smartphones and tablets, rather than relying exclusively on what the IT department supplies.

And it’s boosting productivity.

Research is showing that mobile devices at work directly increase productivity and business information consumption. Not surprisingly, employees want them faster than ever before. The lead employee choices for BYOD are iPads and iPhones.

Switching from a prescribed workphone to a personal smartphone of choice, it is found, brings users greater device knowledge through using something they are familiar with and use much more often.

According to this BBC report, 50% of IT managers believe that BYOD increases productivity. Additionally, in terms of executive level analysis of key business intelligence, 33% is to be consumed on mobile devices by 2013, up from 0% just a couple of years ago.

The trend is acknowledged at senior management and board level. 88% of executives state that employees were using their own personal computing technologies for business purposes. Mobile devices make up an increasing percentage of that figure, with a 500-700% increase in mobile usage for workplace tasks having being noted by business software providers.

Clearly, this is one to watch!
