Meet the Team: Liz Hornby

As part of our new ‘Meet the team’ series, we’re chatting to key members of the LEO GRC family, so you can get to know them better. Today we’re speaking to Liz Hornby, Principal Learning Consultant in the London office.

What does your role as Principal Learning Consultant entail?
I work with clients to design, write and deliver innovative and effective Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) training, both online and in the classroom. I also author some of our generic courses and other products. I am a qualified barrister and a GRC specialist, with many years of experience in the financial services industry.

Which part of working at LEO Learning do you love most?
Working at LEO gives me the opportunity to work with a talented and dedicated team to meet the challenges of the ever-changing regulatory landscape. No day is ever the same and we are never afraid of raising the bar or of going the extra mile.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest non-work-related accomplishment (apart from my wonderful children) has to be completing the ‘GRIM’, an 8-mile run and assault course through the mud of Aldershot army barracks. Running through the lake at the end was something I will never forget—did I mention that it takes place in December!

What is the biggest challenge you’ve overcome?
I recently completed a Research Masters in Corporate Governance and International Business Ethics at Birkbeck, University of London. It was a part-time course with lectures in the evening and lots of essays and exams. It was a long haul, but well worth it.

What are the three things you can’t work without?
That has to be Radio 4 (particularly The Archers), cups of tea and a sense of humor.

What subject could you give a 30-minute presentation about with no advance preparation?
I spend a lot of time in the classroom so I could talk for 30 minutes on many subjects without preparation! Top of my list would have to be whistleblowing. I am currently halfway through a part-time PhD on the topic and it doesn’t take much encouragement for me to talk about it to anyone who will listen.
